Medical Treatment of Obesity
Kim Eun-Sook

Ahn Chul-Woo
Abstract
Obesity is a complex behavioral and metabolic disorder that disrupts the body weight regulatory system. As obesity can lead to metabolic derangements such as diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, it should be considered a risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Currently available drugs for the treatment of obesity have mechanisms of central action that control weight or lower energy input by limiting absorption. For effective and safe treatment of obesity, medication regimens must be guided and monitored by clinicians and used only as adjuncts to diet- and exercise-based behavioral therapies.
